Janet is a mom, mechanical engineer and a Reiki master who runs the virtual Good Vibrations Energy Studio. Janet has practiced yoga for several years and was drawn to Pretzel Kids you to help her own children, both with special needs. Janet wants children of all abilities to learn to trust their bodies and to find peaceful ways of existing.
We recently had the pleasure of talking to this Michigan-based mom and accomplished engineer about her journey with Pretzel Kids yoga.
Here's what she had to say:
Pretzel Kids: Can you tell us a bit more about you?
Janet: I’m mom to a seven year-old and a 10 year-old. I’ve been a yoga student off and on for about 15 years. I have a mechanical engineering degree, and I work for an automotive manufacturer.
Pretzel Kids: Tell me one fun fact about you!
Janet: My eyes change color depending on what I’m wearing.
Pretzel Kids: What do you like to do in your spare time?
Janet: I don’t have much spare time, because the kids keep me pretty busy, but I like to read and knit.
Pretzel Kids: What drew you to the Pretzel Kids yoga online course?
Janet: I really liked the fact that it was online and go-at-your-own-pace. Getting away from my family at night is really hard, and being able to work through the course a little at the time was really helpful. Also, the whole course includes the module on working with children with special needs. This was important to me, and it was unique when I was looking at kids yoga teacher training programs.
Pretzel Kids: What is your favorite thing (or two) about the course?
Janet: I really liked the way the class structure works - and how it's explained in the Pretzel Kids yoga training course. This makes so many other workshops and trainings that I’ve attended make more sense. Also, I love that the course includes so many games to choose from as I have a hard time thinking up games.
Pretzel Kids: Do you feel prepared to teach children's yoga after taking the online Pretzel Kids Teacher Training course?
Janet: Yes! I’ve taught other things to children before, but was having a hard time visualizing how to teach yoga to kids. It wasn't intuitive based on the adult classes I’d been to. But the Pretzel Kids yoga course now gives me the tools I need to teach kids yoga classes.
Pretzel Kids: Where do you live and where would you like to teach Pretzel Kids yoga in your community?
Janet: I live in Troy, Michigan, which is just north of Detroit in the suburbs. Because I have a typical day job, I would really like to teach scout groups, and I’m investigating schools as well. In the long-term, I am hoping to have a wellness center where I can teach Pretzel Kids yoga classes.
Pretzel Kids: How do you hope to make a positive impact with the Pretzel Kids curriculum?
Janet: I feel like so many families are stressed out these days. The mindfulness that kids learn from the Pretzel Kids Yoga program helps them reduce stress. Both of my children are autistic, and yoga helps them with sensory integration, anxiety, flexibility, and more. I want to share these benefits with other families, too.
Pretzel Kids: You had the opportunity to create a couple of Pretzel Kids lesson plans as part of your certification process. What was this creative process like? Do you think this makes teaching easier?
Janet: For me, creating the lesson plans helped me think through how the classes would flow, and whether the themes I picked would work with the kids. Writing those first lesson plans was somewhat challenging, but I expect it will get easier once I get into the swing of it. I have so far practiced my lesson plans at home with my kids, and it certainly makes teaching yoga easier.
Pretzel Kids: How did you hear about Pretzel Kids yoga? Would you recommend the course to friends, moms, childcare providers and yoga teachers? Why?
Janet: I found Pretzel Kids through a Google search. I recommend the course to everyone I talk to! I think it’s a great way to learn how to adapt the yoga we know as adults into a format that kids can use, and I feel like mindfulness is important for every child - at every age.
Pretzel Kids: What's your favorite Pretzel Kids pose?
Janet: I like rainbow pose a lot.
Pretzel Kids: What's your favorite Pretzel Kids game? What's your favorite Pretzel Kids theme?
Janet: I like the animal themes - all of them! I also really like Yogi Go, Yogi Stop, which we play a lot at our house to work on remembering what to do when someone says stop!
Pretzel Kids: What's your favorite food?
