One of our favorite things about summer is getting together outdoors with friends and family. If you’re like us, you may be planning one last hoorah under the sun or shade before the back-to-school season kicks into full gear.
Luckily, there are plenty of things you can do without spending a lot of money, including yoga, trips to the beach and picnics in the park. But, here’s yet another idea to close out the season: a fun-filled barbecue. Of course, no barbecue is complete without a delicious menu. Although you may love creamy potato salad and juicy burgers, Pretzel Kids is here to offer up some more healthy options. Take a look at our 3 top fresh and affordable grilling menu options that will keep your taste buds tingling and memories happy.
Similar to fruit kebabs, grilled peaches often taste yummy with fresh yogurt. Start by buying some fresh peaches at a local farmer’s market, orchard or even your neighborhood supermarket.
Cut each peach in half and place the freshly-cut flat side down on the grill for a few minutes or until you see vivid grill marks. Remove the peaches from the BBQ and set them aside at room temperature. If you prefer your peaches hot off the grill, then skip their cooling and immediately drizzle the cut-sides with honey, agave syrup or a pinch of brown sugar.
The peaches are ready to serve as-is. But, for added flavor, you can also make some yogurt dipping sauces or place the peaches over fruit-flavored, vanilla or natural yogurt. Add chopped nuts and fresh mint for the perfect finishing touches to this delicious, nutritious dessert dish. If you’d like to repeat these steps with different fruits, then go for it! Grilled plums, pineapple, and apples are just as tasty as peaches.
Grilled Cabbage Wedges
Although often underrated, cabbage has many health benefits. For starters, cabbage is a great source of vitamins K, C, and B6, as well as potassium and protein. You can use either green or red cabbage for this easy grilling recipe and still reap the same nutritional value!
To begin, cut the cabbage into strips or wedges and place them on the grill. Be sure to close your grill’s cover and wait for about five minutes. When you open the grill top, the cabbage layers should be charred and softened.
Flip the wedges, close the grill, and wait another five minutes. Open the grill cover again and check to see if the other sides are equally wilted. The middle of the cabbage pieces should still be firm. Once the cabbage wedges look done, remove them from the grill and place them in a serving dish.

Grilled Turkey Burgers
Turkey burgers are healthy substitutes to regular beef burgers and can taste just as delicious. According to Food Network, a 4-oz turkey burger contains just about 200 calories and 3 grams of saturated fat, and is a good source of vitamin B6 and zinc. Food Network suggests choosing burgers solely made from ground turkey meat, as other added dark meats will create a fattier burger.
If you’re planning to make your burgers from scratch, you can buy ground turkey meat at the supermarket, along with the other ingredients listed here. To make your burgers, you’ll mix the ground turkey with seasoned bread crumbs, onion, egg whites, parsley, garlic, salt, and pepper. Of course, feel free to include additional ingredients and take out others, as you may not be a fan of onions or parsley.
To cook the burgers, heat the grill to a medium to high temperature. Place the burgers on the grill and let them cook for about seven minutes on each side. Food Network cautions that turkey burgers often take a bit longer to cook than beef patties, so add a few more minutes if necessary to ensure that the burgers are cooked thoroughly.
When done, take them off the grill and place them onto a serving dish with your favorite condiments! Consider skipping the cheese and placing the grilled cabbage on your patties. Yum!
